Linen Fabric Care

Linen wants simple treatment, and it turns softer the more you wash it.

  1. Wash cold on a delicate cycle. Button it up and turn it inside out. At 30 degrees or cooler on a short cycle, with a mild detergent and no fabric softener, which coats linen and dulls its crispness. Avoid a high spin.
  2. Or wash by hand. Cold or lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Let it soak for ten minutes, swish it gently and never wring it.
  3. Air dry, skip the tumble dryer. Dry flat or on a wide hanger away from direct sunlight. High heat shrinks the weave and breaks the fibre.
  4. Iron while slightly damp. A light spritz of clean, cool water, the linen setting with plenty of steam on a steady board, and a pressing cloth between the iron and the linen to prevent shiny spots. Or leave the relaxed crease, which is part of linen’s character.
  5. Hang or fold, by the piece. Hang shirts, dresses and jackets on a wide wooden or padded hanger with the top button closed, so the weave relaxes and creases fall out. Fold heavier trousers and anything you put away for the season, loosely and with acid free tissue, so their own weight never pulls the fabric out of shape. Keep linen cool, dry and dark, in cotton bags or on open shelves, never in sealed plastic.
  6. Spot clean quickly, dab never rub. Cool water and a drop of gentle soap, treated within the hour.
  7. Air it between wears. Linen often needs no wash after a day. Hang it by an open window overnight and it is fresh again.
  8. When a seam opens, send it to us. Repair is complimentary for every HACOY piece, whatever its age. Start a repair and we bring it back.
